Who Gets Addicted And How - 1174 Words

The Downtown Eastside is considered to be Canada s drug capital, with an addict population of 3,000 to 5,000 individuals. These are the words by Gabor Mate a Canadian physician specializes in addiction. Mate is describing that most of his patients are addicted to cocaine, alcohol, and heroin(Mate 320).This means that most of the people in Downtown Eastside are addicts to illegal substances such as Cocaine, Heroine etc. Addict is someone who cannot survive without particular substance such as Tea, Coffee, Alcohol etc. Living without these kinds of substances is very difficult for an addict person, that he/she gets addicted for a lifetime. Addiction can be caused by Genetic predisposition, but the biggest cause of addiction†¦show more content†¦Henderson’s points out is correct because in a young age a person gets mostly influenced by his/her friends and follow them .For instance, If a person is in a group or in a group meeting, it is often that the person usually fol low the interest of the group. If he/she doesn’t everybody in the group will think that the person is so awkward. So, a person usually copies their peers which causes addiction. Apart from this, drinking excess alcohol in a young age, just for fun can lead the peer to try more dangerous drugs in his/her life. As P.J Graham in his essay â€Å"Alcohol and having Fun† that â€Å"most of the teens try drugs because of fun and enjoyment†. It makes them feel good† (Graham 150).Graham is correct because most of the teens are unaware about the dangerous effects of illegal substances on their health and life. During the first try, it makes them feel excellent. However, this first try of a sip of an alcohol, becomes the lifelong addiction and the teen will eventually found himself trapped in an addiction. Moreover ,trying illegal substances such as alcohol which is readily available in market, can also lead the peer to go through other drugs such as cocaine ,heroin because it’s in addicts mind that, if the alcohol makes him so happy then why not try other drugs. Hence, trying specific drug for a first time can also lead to addiction. Secondly, Addiction is also a result of easy availability of substances such as
